As the only Embassy in Canberra which has permanent displays open to the public, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia offers a rare opportunity for students to experience such a rich culture first hand.
The Embassy’s Culture Centre is an interactive, hands-on experience of Indonesian culture for school students and the general public.
The Centre’s visitors can explore many facets of Indonesian arts, culture, geography and daily life.
The Cultural Centre features some of the ancient and more contemporary traditions.
There are many interactive exhibits on display, including: wayang kulit (shadow puppets) and the accompanying gamelan musical instruments as well as an angklung musical instrument.
Both the The wayang kulit theatre and the angklung have been designated by UNESCO as Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Visitors can also enjoy the Culture Centre’s traditional architecture, with its tranquil surroundings abd large fishponds.
To enter, visitors are invited to walk up steps to the Balinese Gapura (gate), along the way passing a miniature of the world’s largest Buddhist temple, the Borobudur Temple, and statues of good and evil characters from the epic story of the Mahabarata and the Ramayana.
Access to the Culture Centre is free with the Centre being open from 9:00am to 5:00pm (weekdays only)
